Brava & Mission Academy of Performing Arts present a Special Screening of
October 8 – 15, 2020
Middle and High School students from across San Francisco participate in Mission Academy of Performing Arts @ Brava (MAPA@Brava), receiving training in theater production and performance. Each year, the youth programs of MAPA@Brava collaborate to create a full-length production on Brava's Main Stage, which is performed live for youth across the Bay Area.
With the onset of Covid and the inability to invite audiences into our space for a live performance, we are bringing the performance online! From October 8 – October 15, 2020, Brava will screen MAPA’s 2017 production, Hope and the Mission (La Esperanza y la Misión), via Brava’s Vimeo platform.
Hope and the Mission is a bilingual coming-of-age story revolving around the young character Hope whose Mission District family finds themselves on the sidelines of a changing neighborhood and at odds with each other over generational differences. Alongside the theme of gentrification, the play examines cultural identity and gender fluidity through song, dance, and humor.
Hope and the Mission was written by emerging local playwright Javier Hurtado, with set, lighting, and sound design by the San Francisco Running Crew (SFRC) – Brava’s longstanding technical theater program for youth – and performances by students of the San Francisco Youth Theatre, Cuicacalli Escuela De Danza, and Mariachi Juvenil La Misión.
Live from Germany with artists George N Roses/Lola Roses & Colin Griffiths-Brown.

Brava & Diamond Wave present
THURSDAY, MAY 14, 2020
7:00pm - Screening of #femMASCULINE
8:10pm - Post-screening discussion
Join Brava and Diamond Wave for a screening of #femMASCULINE, Kevin Seaman’s debut solo performance which premiered at Brava in October 2019. In the rigidly binary world of gay men, one horny drag queen wants it all! The hit #femMASCULINE mashes drag, media, song and dance to explore the toxicity of the contemporary gay digital experience. #femMASCULINE is a mixed media, millennial meme machine that takes a wrecking ball to gender norms, leaving no binary intact, save one: be there, or be square!
Following the screening of #femMASCULINE, join lead artist Kevin Seaman and other contributing artists for a virtual dialogue about the creation process, personal reflections, and next steps for this project.
Help artists and the arts survive (and thrive) during this time by making a donation to Brava, and to Diamond Wave, the artists behind #femMASCULINE. THANK YOU!
