BACCE takes the So Soul San Francisco Black Arts Salon Series online with interviews and stories of Black artistry from around the globe.

Each month the Salon Series features interviews with artists working outside of the United States, offering an exciting and unique look at what’s happening everywhere. In December, So Soul hosts interview actor Kahlid Elijah Tapia and performer and choreographer Pjay Phillips.

We take the opportunity in this unprecedented moment to stay engaged with our audience and to make connections with artists working in other countries to discover new ways to practice and be Black artists.

This free, online event will be live on BACCE’s YouTube page. Make sure to subscribe to see the latest!

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Kahlid Elijah Tapia
I have an Arabic first name, Hebrew middle name and Spanish last name. Being “that guy” was just inevitable. And there’s just no fun in normal!  So, I did the unconventional, went to South Korea and beat the odds.  With a variety of roles in film and theater under my belt, ranging from a C.I.A. Operative to a Bi-sexual Receptionist; from Henry Brown in RACE  to Aaron, The Moor in TITUS ANDRONICUS. As an African-American actor, type casting was never an issue because the entertainment world of Korea saw fit to diversely utilize my talent. With supporting roles in Korean blockbusters such as Seu-pa-i (2013)Gamgi (2013), & Jojak Dwen Doshi (2017), all of which hit #1 in the Korean box office…it’s evident that I don’t do things the traditional way.

Pjay Phillips is a multi-talented international performer and choreographer most recently known for her sultry headlining performance during the Cannes film festival in France. Phillip's international performances include stints in Morocco (Hotel Palace owned by the King Of Morocco), Paris, Taiwan, Canada, and Italy. Pjay’s performance and choreography repertoire includes Yoshi's, (Oakland), Jimmy Kimmel, Theatreworks ('Caroline or Change'[critics circle award best Musical] and ('Crowns'),Center Theatre Group (The Christians), Willows Theatre ('Aida' and 'The Wiz'), American Musical Theatre, ('Dreamgirls' and 'Grease'), Lorraine Hansberry Theatre ('Black Nativity,' 'Black and Blue,' 'Crumbs From The Table Of Joy,' and 'Eubie'), African American Cultural Arts ('The Josephine Baker Story'), Theatre On San Pedro Square ('8 Track'), SF Playwrights ('Every Tongue Must Confess') and Marin Theatre ('Beggar’s Holiday').
