Brava & La Lengua Teatro en Español present

Adios, Robinson, a radio play by Julio Cortázar

NOVEMBER 28 - DECEMBER 5
One week only!

The central idea is good, ecological, deontological, ‘contestatory’ and very current, and that we
Latin Americans must find it congenial for obvious reasons: we’re all a bit Friday.
— Julio Cortázar, 1977

What would happen if Robinson Crusoe and Friday returned 300 years later to visit Juan Fernandez Island, where they met as castaways? Robinson realizes that the island, ‘his island,’ has become another city, an urban nucleus; that civilization and progress have reached it and turned it into a structured system in which imagination and spontaneity have no place. It is precisely this Modernity that makes Robinson feel more alone than ever. He wonders, “Would the best thing have been to civilize Friday? Was it really I who saved Friday from his wild nature? Or was he the one who saved me?”

Characterized as an anti-colonial, entertaining and ironic fable, Cortázar's 1977 radio drama represents the dominated and subjugated peoples, who in the name of civilization and progress, have had to reorganize their own subjectivity.

Adios, Robinson runs 40 minutes, in Spanish with English subtitles. To read about the event in Spanish, please click here.
