SON JAROCHO FESTIVAL

A TRIBUTE TO ANDRÉS FLORES
Featuring Chuchumbé desde México, Los Hijos de José, Tarimba, & special guests Quetzal Flores and Martha Gonzalez.
Explore the folkloric music style of Veracruz during a week-long festival of live music, community fandango, workshops with master artists, and a panel discussion when Brava presents the 7th Annual San Francisco Son Jarocho Festival.
All Festival events take place at Brava Theater Center, with the exception of the Wednesday, February 6 workshop which will happen at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley.

FRIDAY, FEB 8
RECEPTION & ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION
Join KPOO host and producer Chelis Lopez, along with Patricio Hildalgo, Liche Oseguera, Russell Rodriguez, Quetzal Flores, and Martha Gonzalez for a panel discussion on Andrés Flores’ influence on Bay Area Son Jarocho.
5pm – Reception with Tostada Bar

Tickets for the reception and discussion are $10.
FRIDAY, FEB 8
FANDANGO DE LA CANDELARIA
Join us for the cultural convening ritual known as Fandango de La Candelaria, a late-night session of instruments, dancing, voices and verse. Bring your instruments and your dancing shoes!

SATURDAY, FEB 9
LIVE CONCERT
Celebrate the life of Andrés Flores with a live concert featuring Chuchumbé desde México with musicians Patricio Hidalgo, Yaratze Hidalgo Sandoval, Felix Jose Oseguera Rueda, and Juan Francisco Galvan, Los Hijos de José with José Roberto Hernández, Federico Zuniga Jr., and Russell C Rodríguez, with special guests Quetzal Flores and Martha Gonzalez. Opening the concert is Tarimba with Lolis García, Kyla Danysh, and Joel Ramirez.

WEDNESDAY, FEB 6
MASTER WORKSHOPS
Kick off the 2019 San Francisco Son Jarocho Festival with talleres at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley. Master artists from the Festival will lead classes in jarana jarocha, zapateado (percussive footwork), guitarra de son (requinto), and end the evening with a mini-jam session. Expected instructors include Patricio Hidalgo Belli, Félix José “Liche” Oseguera Rueda, Amairani Flores Pitalúa, and Yaratze Hidalgo Sandoval.
7:00pm – jarana jarocha (beginner), zapateado (beginner), guitarra de son/requinto (experienced players)
8:00pm – jarana jarocha (advanced), zapateado (advanced)
9:30pm – mini jam session (all levels, all instruments)
$15 for beginner classes (includes jam session)
