Need to juice up on your NONBINARY energy but can’t wait until November for the THEYFRIEND Nonbinary Performance Festival? Well enbies, you’re in luck! Join us for the second THEYFRIEND Nonbinary Cabaret!

For our April show, we’re thrilled to be working with powerhouse performers, including: 

👑 Drag king Jota Mercury (Best Drag King of the Bay ‘20, ‘21, 23)

✍️ Poet Alder Duan Hurley (THEYFRIEND ‘22 & ‘23)

🤣 Experimental performance artist Xtra.dae (THEYFRIEND ‘23)

Hosted by Brava artist-in-residence and THEYFRIEND founder Vin Seaman, this will be a thrilling night of live performance uplifting, centering and celebrating nonbinary identity!

But that’s not all! There will also be a few OPEN MIC slots at the beginning of the show for emerging nonbinary performers looking to flex their skills. 

  • Be sure to arrive at 7 PM and sign up with Vin if you’re interested in performing! 

  • Open mic performers will have 5 minutes for their performances with minimal tech needs (microphone and audio playback available).

Brava is wheelchair accessible. The space also includes an upstairs mezzanine with additional seating that is only accessible by a flight of stairs.

ABOUT THE artists

Alder Duan Hurley (he/they) is a mixed-race Chinese American poet based in the East Bay, on Ohlone land. He has performed his work at Kearny Street Workshop’s APAture, at Diamondwave’s Theyfriend, and at GAPA’s 2022 QTAPI week celebration. They are the winner of the Wilner Award in Short Fiction at SFSU, where they are currently an MFA student.

Jota Mercury (they/he) is an international award winning drag performer who uses drag to  challenge machismo as we know it. They are Mexican-American and Indigenous, originally from Fresno, California but entertaining crowds in the greater bay area for the past 6 years. You may recognize him performing alongside his drag brothers in the following troupes: Rebel Kings of Oakland, Yeah Girl, and Nine Inch Males. He’s participated in global competitions, going as far as Panama City, Panamá to perform his El Rey act for the Panama Burlesque Festival. They are 48Hills’ best drag king of the bay for 2020, 2021, and 2023.

Vin Seaman (they/them) is an interdisciplinary artist, drag queen (LOL McFiercen) and the director of Diamond Wave. Their work exploring queer identity and drag culture has been presented at The Stud, Brava, Oasis, El Rio, CounterPulse, the de Young, the Salesforce Tower, Frameline, the Tank NYC, the Austin International Drag Festival, SATELLITE ART SHOW Miami, the National Queer Arts Festival, Stockholm’s Stolt Scenkonst, Atlantic Center for the Arts, and Yale School of the Arts.

Xtra.dae (they/them) is the moniker of Daeun Maroon Hwang, an experimental performance artist residing in Ohlone land in Oakland, California and originally from South Korea. Daeun Hwang is also a Community Organizer and have worked to curate community building workshops and events which informs their exploration of community in Diaspora. Xtra.dae is a persona that Daeun has created to connect with stories of korean mythology and folktales. As well as imagined fantastical stories of origin pre colonization. Using documentation from their life, Xtra.dae uses the life of Daeun Hwang to push reflection and exploration of the nonbinary in gender, queerness, and Asianness.


About THEYFRIEND

Now in its fourth year, THEYFRIEND is the world’s first performance festival uplifting, centering, and celebrating nonbinary identity! Held annually during Trans Awareness Week, THEYFRIEND works with arts presenters and nightlife venues to create high quality performance showcases centering nonbinary identity and experience.
