After 25 years of outrageous wigs, precision choreography, fearless absurdity, and an ever-evolving cast of artists, Fou Fou Ha! returns to the stage for a one-night-only anniversary celebration. Foutenanny! brings together performers from across the company's four national squads for an evening honoring the troupe's history while celebrating the vibrant creative community that continues to shape its craft today.
Taking place at Brava Theater in San Francisco on Friday, October 2, the anniversary production reunites founding and current performers from across the country for a rare gathering that showcases signature ensemble works from throughout Fou Fou Ha!'s history alongside new performances and special guest appearances.
Founded in 2001 by Maya Culbertson-Lane ("MamaFou") as part of the Funky Puppet Circus Supper at Cell Space in San Francisco, Fou Fou Ha! has grown from an underground local phenomenon into a nationally recognized psychedelic clown ensemble. Blending Bob Fosse-inspired choreography, physical comedy, theatrical spectacle, and highly individualized clown characters, the company has performed countless productions throughout the United States while cultivating a devoted following.
Each Fou performer develops a distinct clown persona, complete with an original costume and vividly colored wig, inspired by their own personal clown story. Beneath the exuberant aesthetics lies a deeper artistic exploration influenced by Carl Jung's concept of the shadow self, the hidden aspects of ourselves that, when brought into the light through play and performance, become sources of creativity, connection, and liberation.
