Talented Danzas por Nicaragua dancers, alongside a coalition of Nicaraguan artists will bring life to El Güegüense, a satire that dates back to the colonial-era in meso America representing the resistence to the Spanish crown. It is the most distinctive theatrical performance from Nicaragua that combines folkloric music, dance, and theater.

Danzas por Nicaragua and invited guests will pay tribute to the culture via folkore, live marimba and contempary dance throughout the night.

The performance will be divided into two acts Act One is the satirical play El Güegüense, pronounced a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005. Set in the 1500s, it depicts the conflicts between the Spanish Crown and the colonized, the native Mestizo Indigenous people. The satire is a denunciation of corruption and the abuse of power, and tells a story of how an indigenous man tricked his way into social status. Social political turmoil, classes and status, race and discrimination are themes woven into the play, all of which reflect the present day and how the Nicaraguan community has been subjected to many of the same obstacles and injustices. Act Two celebrates 200 years of Central American Independence from Spanish Rule with folkloric dancing depicting different styles and regions accompanied by a live Marimba player who will also be traveling from Nicaragua.
