In collaboration with Brava! for Women in the Arts, Cultural Odyssey presents
Landscape of Desire: An Evening with Rhodessa Jones and Friends
Saturday, April 21 - 8pm
Landscape of Desire is Rhodessa Jones’ homage to the beatnik coffee houses of San Francisco’s North Beach and New York's Greenwich Village in the 1960s, when beat poets and folk singers met free-improvising saxophones and guitars amid the urgency of the civil rights struggle. Updated for the 21st Century reality, Landscape of Desire is a musical/theater piece featuring the storytelling, songwriting and the inimitable vocal style of Rhodessa Jones as she asks the questions: What is desire? What does it look like? What does it taste like? What does it sound like?
Over the past five decades Ms. Jones has tooled a lifetime of self portraits as performance. Landscape of Desire returns to embrace the personal as public to summon the life and times of A woman for the 21st Century. Written by Rhodessa Jones, directed by her long-time partner Idris Ackamoor, musical arrangement by Bobby Cobb and Idris Ackamoor and dramaturgy by Felirene Bongolan, the production will be driven by Rhodessa Jones’ unique songwriting style and vocal delivery that is urgent, poignant, visceral and inimitable!
In Landscape of Desire Ms. Jones invites the audience into her world paying homage to the inspirational songwriting of Bob Dylan, the brashness of Nina Simone, and the theatricality of Ethel Waters.
