Bay Area Flamenco presents GUITARRA DE PALO

A Film and Live All-Star Concert, Direct from Spain

Sunday, April 6th, 6pm

Bay Area Flamenco is honored to present GUITARRA DE PALO, an evening featuring both the Bay Area Premiere of Andrea Zapata Girau's hour-long music documentary, "Guitarra de Palo" and a 90-minute live performance by the main musicians from the film.

About the live concert:

An all-star lineup with some of the most well-known and charismatic artists of Spain's flamenco-jazz scene: flamenco guitarist Antón Jiménez (Joaquín Cortés), legendary trumpeter and percussionist Jerry González (Fort Apache/Comandos de la Clave), renowned flautist Jorge Pardo (Paco de Lucía/Chick Corea), blues-flamenco guitarist Raimundo Amador (Pata Negra), bass player Javier Colina (Bebo & Cigala), percussionist Israel Suárez "Piraña" (Buika/Paco de Lucía), flamenco singer Rafita Jiménez and flamenco dancer David Paniagua (Antonio Canales).

About the film:

The documentary film,"Guitarra de Palo", by Zapata Girau is an anthropological-musical voyage without dialogue or narration: the music speaks for itself. Shot in Spain, Cuba, the United States, Nicaragua, Germany, Russia and the Cayman Islands, the flamenco guitar acts as the main character as the film showcases some of the most renowned names of flamenco and its contemporary fusions. The documentary is highlighted by its stunning cinematography and its sound design, the work of Goya Award winner (Spain's Academy Awards) Pelayo Guiterrez and Nacho Royo-Villanova.

Guitarra de Palo Trailer:

Guitarra de Palo is a phenomenal, timeless work of art - beautiful and powerful in every aspect. It is simply one of the greatest music films ever made! The cinematography, story line, musical recording and editing are all first tier in execution and creativity. And the music!!!! The music is phenomenal, sentimental, historic and breathtaking. The film is so full of magic that it gets under the skin - connects to distant places, condenses centuries, opens the heart. This is what music is all about - dance, celebration, humanity, transcendence! Duende puro!!! What a journey! What an opportunity! What a gift!
— John Santos, 5-time-Grammy®-nominated Percussionist and Educator
