Internationally renowned Trio Los Panchos

Brava is very excited to announce the return of Trio Los Panchos in a benefit for Brava Theater. Recipients of a 2005 proclamation from the City of San Francisco for their cultural contribution, Los Panchos have enthralled audiences around the world with their seductive vocals and classic repertoire.

Formado en 1944 en la ciudad de Nueva York por dos músicos mexicanos, Jesus “Chucho” Navarro Moreno y Alfredo “El Guero” Gil, y el puertorriqueño, Hernando Aviles, el trío tomo el escenario en el Teatro Hispánico, llamandose “Trío Los Panchos.” Tomando su nombre del famoso revolucionario mexicano Pancho Villa, Los Panchos hicieron una carrera de casi 40 años, 2500 canciones, y mas de 200 discos incluyendo varias grabaciones con Edie Gorme en los 1960’s. Continuando la tradición del grupo original, el trío contemporaneo esta dirigido por Gaby Vargas, el hijastro de Alfredo Gil.
Los Panchos crearon una época romántica al nivel mundial con el sonido del bolero. Las interpreteciones emocianales de “Besame Mucho,” “Quizas, Quizas, Quizas,” y “Sin Ti” los propulsó en fama internacional. Su música era una version actualizada de la música tradicional del trio de Mexico central; su sonido liso, las armonias apacibles y los aires sencillos dieron el género a un estilo Nuevo y una vida nueva.
Para añadir a su sonido extraordinario, el grupo utilizó el “requinto,” una guitarra pequeña inventada por el miembro fundador de Los Panchos, Alfredo Gil. El “requinto” llegó a ser un instrumento uniforme para los trios, compuesto típicamente de tres guitarras y con las armonias de las voces.
Los Panchos han atravesado muchas encarnaciones atraves de los años. El último sobreviviente miembro original de Los Panchos, Alfredo Gil, murió en 1999 dejando el legado y el nombre del grupo a su hijastro, Gaby Vargas, que empezó a estudiar el requinto con Gil as los 8 años de edad. Vargas empezó a tocar con el Trío en 1978 cuando Gil se jubiló su lugar. Vargas tomó su lugar y continuó tocando al lado del miembro fundador Chucho Navarro has su muerte en 1993. Vargas formó el trio actual en 1994 y continua como su lider junto con Jaime Ariel Miranda y Taurino Aguilar. Ellos viajan internacionalmente y han grabado el CD “Los Panchos de El Guero Gil con Gaby Vargas.”
Formed in 1944 in New York City by two Mexican musicians, Jesus “Chucho” Navarro Moreno and Alfredo “El Guero” Gil, and a Puerto Rican, Hernando Aviles, the trio took to the stage of the Hispanic Theater, calling themselves “Trio Los Panchos.” Taking their names from the famous Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa, Los Panchos boasted a career of almost 40 years, 2500 songs, and 300 albums including recordings with Edie Gorme in the 1960’s. Alfredo Gil’s stepson, Gaby Vargas, leads the contemporary trio.
Known for its soft harmonics particularly in the romantic bolero, Los Panchos found an audience for their music throughout the world. Their emotional interpretations of “Besame Mucho,” “Quizas, Quizas, Quizas,” and “Sin Ti” propelled them into international fame. Their music was an updated version of the traditional trio music of central Mexico; their smooth sound, gentle harmonies and simple tunes gave the genre a new style and life. To add to their unique sound, the group made use of the “requinto,” a small-sized guitar invented by Los Panchos founding member, Alfredo Gil; the “requinto” became a standard instrument for trios, typically made up of three guitars and voice harmonies.
Los Panchos has gone through many incarnations over the years. The last surviving original member of los Panchos, Alfredo Gil, died in 1999 leaving the legacy and name of the group to his stepson, Gaby Vargas, who began studying requinto with Gil at the age of 8. Vargas began playing with the Trio in 1978 when Gil retired his spot. Vargas continued playing alongside founding member Chucho Navarro until his death in 1993; Vargas formed the present day trio in 1994 and continues as its leader alongside Jamie Islas Miranda and Taurino Aguilar. They tour internationally and have recorded the CD “Los Panchos de El Guero Gil con Gaby Vargas.
