ABOUT Martha Cabrera Guerrero

Martha Cabrera Guerrero

ENGLISH

Martha Cabrera Guerrero is a mother, wife, and a distinguished Mexican archaeologist whose career has set a precedent in academia and science, particularly in a field historically dominated by men. Originally from Mexico City, she graduated with honors from the National School of Anthropology and History (ENAH), receiving the Alfonso Caso National Prize for her outstanding thesis on the ancient inhabitants of Acapulco, an exceptional achievement for a young woman in the 1980s.

From her early days as a student, she participated in important excavations such as the Metropolitan Cathedral Archaeological Project and was quickly recognized for her leadership and academic rigor. Her passion and commitment led her to become a researcher at the INAH, where she coordinated and directed large-scale projects, such as the Acapulco Renaissance Project and the Archaeological Atlas of Western Mexico, covering states such as Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco, and Nayarit.

In a context where women faced multiple barriers, Cabrera Guerrero paved the way for the protection of cultural heritage in Guerrero, standing out for her work in the preservation of rock art sites such as Palma Sola and La Sabana, and for coordinating the museographic design of the Fuerte de San Diego Museum and being in charge of the Per-Hispanic gallery, inaugurated in 1986.

Her voice has been heard in international forums—the United States, Europe, and Russia—and her publications, including The Pre-Hispanic Settlers of Acapulco and The Grutas de Juxtlahuaca, have contributed to the understanding of the pre-Hispanic history of southern Mexico from a comprehensive and committed perspective.
