René y Familia will perform a live show celebrating the release of their album, “Somos Diferentes” at Brava’s Cabaret.

Led by educator, songwriter and accordionist, René Peña-Govea, René y Familia is comprised of three generations of La Familia Peña-Govea, including Bay Area bandleader and multi-instrumentalist, Miguel Govea, educator Susan Peña, and the iconic Cecilia Cassandra Peña-Govea, also known as La Doña, along with René’s son, Diego. The family has been playing a variety of Latin musical styles decades together in the Bay Area, and bring their same signature warmth and musical talents to this new project.

For songs that speak to both children and adults in Spanish and English, look no further! Proud to present a live show with favorites such as “A Tomar el Bus,” “Chameleon Boy,” and many more, René y Familia will have the whole family dancing, singing, and feeling good!

The album goes live for streaming on all digital platforms September 2, and CDs and other merchandise will be available for purchase at the concert. Special thanks to the Alliance for California Traditional Arts and the Center for Cultural Innovation’s Zoo Labs for grants supporting this project.

ABOUT RENÉ Y FAMILIA

René began playing the accordion with La Familia Peña-Govea as a child, releasing her first album as a teenager, René at 15. Many years later as a mother and teacher, René felt called to address the socio-emotional needs of her own children and students during the pandemic, and together with Diego, composed twenty original bilingual songs for the KTVU show, SF Loves Learning. Now, a selection of those songs makes up the album Somos Diferentes, touching on the radical and empowering themes of identity, personal accountability, community, and solidarity, along with the simple joys of nature and public transportation. Drawing from diverse musical traditions ranging from corrido, bossa nova, cumbia, doo-wop, reggae, and old-time, Somos Diferentes employs catchy sing-along hooks, and danceable beats.
